Functionality differences for geodatabases in Azure SQL Database

Support for geodatabases in Microsoft Azure SQL Databases is restricted to those you create using ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Microsoft Azure.

Once created, these geodatabases behave in almost the same way as geodatabases in SQL Server. There are a few functionality differences, though, and these are described in the following list:

  • Connect to the database using database authentication; operating system authentication is not supported from ArcGIS.
  • When using the Database Connections dialog box in an ArcGIS Desktop client to connect to a geodatabase in Azure SQL Database as any user other than the database administrator, you'll need to type the name of the database in the Database field.
  • Use either Microsoft Geometry or Geography data types for the spatial fields in your feature classes; sdebinary storage is not supported.
  • The geodatabase administrator cannot drop client connections from the Geodatabase Administration dialog box in ArcGIS Desktop clients.
