Functionality differences for geodatabases in Azure SQL Database

Geodatabases in Microsoft Azure SQL Databases behave in almost the same way as geodatabases in SQL Server. There are a few functionality differences, though, and these are described in the following list:

  • Connect to the database using database authentication; operating system authentication is not supported from ArcGIS.
  • When using the Database Connections dialog box in an ArcGIS Desktop client to connect to a geodatabase in Azure SQL Database as any user other than the database administrator, you'll need to type the name of the database in the Database field.
  • Use either Microsoft Geometry or Geography data types for the spatial fields in your feature classes; sdebinary storage is not supported.
  • The geodatabase administrator cannot drop client connections from the Geodatabase Administration dialog box in ArcGIS Desktop clients.
