About usage reports

Portal for ArcGIS records various usage statistics for items, users and groups, and reports this information in the portal website through the Activity Dashboard for ArcGIS app. If you're an Administrator of your organization or you have the correct privileges (explained below), use this information to monitor reports, information, and metrics detailing activities related to items, users, and groups. For example, monitoring usage reports help you answer questions such as:

  • How many web maps were created in my organization today?
  • How many services were registered and shared this week?
  • How does this month's activity and use compare to that of last month?
  • How many collaboration and sharing groups are in the organization?

Role of usage reports

Usage reports are an important tool for monitoring your organization. The reports help you identify how members are using, sharing, and contributing resources. The reports also represent a history of events that occur over time.

For example, an administrator may log in to the Activity Dashboard app and view reports detailing contributions from specific publishers in the organization. Upon examining the report, the administrator can correlate a decrease in disk space on the hosting server to recent publishing activity from a specific member. Using this information, the administrator can confront the member about proper publishing or increase disk space to avoid exceeding capacity.

Access usage reports

As an Administrator of your organization or member with the correct privileges, there is nothing for you to install or configure; Activity Dashboard is embedded directly within your portal. You can access the app and view usage reports using the portal website. For full instructions, see Working with usage reports.

Grant non-Administrators access to usage reports

To provide members access to usage reports without promoting them to Administrator, create a custom role with the following minimum administrative privileges:

  • View all member account info
  • View group owned by member
  • View content owned by member

To learn how to create a custom role, see Configure roles.
