Analyze Living Atlas layers

There are several ways to access Living Atlas of the World layers from analysis tools in the portal map viewer.

Your portal administrator can define a gallery that contains layers appropriate for analysis workflows. These feature layers would contain a single layer and include attribute information applicable for analysis in your organization.

Analyze map layers

In many cases, you will be working with a web map that contains the layers you want to analyze. When you open analysis tools in the map viewer, you can choose to run the tools on qualifying layers in your map. If a feature layer in your map contains multiple layers, you can choose one of the layers to analyze.

Search for layers not in the map

If the layers you need to use in an analysis tool are not present in the map, you have different options for finding layers available to you from the tool, depending on how your portal is configured.

Choose Living Atlas Analysis Layers

If your portal administrator configured the portal to use Living Atlas Analysis Layers, you will see the option to Choose Living Atlas Analysis Layers when you run analysis tools in the map viewer.

This option lets you browse or search Living Atlas feature layers from ArcGIS Online.

Choose analysis layers from a custom group

Your portal administrator can define a custom group containing layers that should be used in analysis in your organization. These layers can come from different sources, such as layers published directly to your portal, layers from other servers, and Living Atlas layers.

When the portal administrator configures the portal to use a custom group of layers for analysis, you will see the option to Choose Analysis Layers when you run analysis tools in the map viewer. This option helps to focus your layer search to those layers most appropriate for your organization.

Browse layers

The option to Browse Layers will always be available in analysis tools. This option lets you search all layers in the portal to which you have access. If you can't find the layer you need using one of the other options or, if your portal administrator has not configured a specific group to use for analysis, use the Browse Layers option.

Since all layers are returned, some of the layers may not be appropriate for analysis. However, this option is useful when you need to search a big data file share for use in GeoAnalytics Tools or if you need to access an individual layer within a feature layer.

For example, if your portal administrator has configured the portal to use local hosted feature layers of Living Atlas boundaries, those hosted feature layers contain several layers. To use one of these layers in an analysis tool, use the Browse Layers option and search for owner:esri_boundarylayers. Once you choose one of the boundary hosted feature layers, choose an individual layer to analyze.
