Configure the organization to geocode addresses

In ArcGIS Enterprise, you can use a locator to turn addresses or place-names into points on the map.

Add geocode services in ArcGIS Enterprise

To turn addresses into points on the map in your organization, you must add a geocode service to your organization and configure it as a Utility Service. You can configure and use the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service, but this requires ArcGIS Online credits to do batch geocoding. Alternatively, you can publish your own locator as a geocode service to ArcGIS Enterprise and use it.

See Configure utility services for more information on setting a locator in your organization to enable geocoding. For information on configuring the service, see the next sections.

Configure the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service for ArcGIS Enterprise

To configure the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service for ArcGIS Enterprise, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your organization as an administrator.
  2. Go to Organization tab, click Settings, and click > ArcGIS Online.
  3. Check the Geocode check box and enter your ArcGIS Online user name and password. Note that any time the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service is used for batch geocoding in this organization, credits are deducted from the account of the ArcGIS Online user you specify on this dialog box.
  4. Click Configure.

The ArcGIS World Geocoding Service must be configured to allow users to create locator views. If the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service is deleted, locator views no longer function. If you configured the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service before upgrading to ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6, you must disable and reenable the utility service to support locator views. If instead of using a locator view, you want to configure your own locator in ArcGIS Enterprise, see the section below.

Configure your own locator for ArcGIS Enterprise

To configure your own locator for ArcGIS Enterprise, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a locator in ArcGIS Pro using your data.
  2. Share a locator from ArcGIS Pro and configure the properties of the locator service in ArcGIS Pro.
  3. Configure the shared locator for your organization. Go to Organization > Settings > Utility Services.

Configure your own locator in ArcMap

Enable Suggest capabilities on the locator service if you want address or place-name suggestions to appear when users search in Map Viewer.

  1. Create an address locator in ArcMap using your data. If you want to use suggestions in the Map Viewer, check the Suggest option on the Create Address Locator tool when you create the locator.
  2. Publish the locator as a service by right-clicking the locator in the Catalog tree in ArcMap or ArcCatalog and selecting Share As Service.

For more information on publishing a service, see Service publishing in ArcGIS Desktop in the ArcGIS Server help.

  3. Configure the published service as a locator for your portal. Go to Organization > Settings > Utility Services.
