ArcGIS Enterprise allows you to explore, understand, measure, and discover patterns in geographic data. The sections below summarize how you can use maps, scenes, and apps in ArcGIS Enterprise.

Your access to functionality depends on privileges granted to you through role membership, which is configured by an administrator.
Use maps
You can explore, analyze, edit, and collect data using maps.
View data in maps
The interactive maps in ArcGIS allow you to explore, visualize, and understand your organization's data in 2D. Data-viewing tools such as pop-ups, legends, filters, and transparency allow you to focus on the data that's important to you.
Visualize time
If you see a time slider at the bottom of a map, it means that the map includes one or more temporal layers, and you can move the slider to see how the information changes over time.
Measure and view coordinates
Measure the area of a polygon, the length of a line, or find the coordinates of a point.
Get directions
Direction options include return to start and optimize the order. Once you get directions, you can zoom to the full route, and print the directions. If your role allows, you can perform analysis on the route.
Edit features in maps
You may need to provide input about feature data available in your organization. For example, you may need to contribute attribute information or attach media files such as photographs, audio files, and video files, to specific features. Map authors can include a feature layer that you can edit in a map they share with you, or you can add an editable feature layer to Map Viewer to perform the edits you need.
Collect data in the field
You can create a map containing editable feature layers to be taken offline. You and other users can download the map to a smartphone or tablet to collect and update information in the field, log your current location, and put data that you capture to work so you can make more informed and timely decisions.
Perform analysis
Maps allow you to find patterns, assess trends, and make decisions. But many patterns and relationships aren't obvious just by looking at a map. Analysis tools allow you to quantify patterns and relationships in the data and display the results as maps, tables, and charts. Analysis tools in Map Viewer allow you to answer questions and make important decisions using more than a visual analysis.
Use scenes
Use Scene Viewer with a desktop web browser to explore symbolized geospatial content. Scenes can include a collection of 2D and 3D layers, styles, and configurations that allow you to visualize and analyze geographic information in an intuitive and interactive 3D environment.
Use apps
ArcGIS includes a wide range of apps that help you interact with the maps and data in your organization. You can use out-of-the-box Esri apps or create your own using templates.
Several of the Esri apps that are licensed and accessed through ArcGIS Enterprise, as well as other custom applications used by your organization, are available in the app launcher.
Click the app launcher button 
in the header of your organization to see the apps available to you. You can access the following from the app launcher:
- Apps for which you have a license
- Web apps that your administrator has added to the app launcher and have been shared with you
When you click an app in the app launcher, the app opens in a new browser tab.
Tip:
Apps recently added by an administrator are marked with a green dot.
You can change the order of apps in the app launcher by dragging the icons to different locations in the app launcher window. If you have access to more apps than you frequently use, you can clean up your app launcher gallery by clicking Show More at the bottom of the window and dragging some of the apps to the secondary area. Use this area for apps that you use less frequently, as they are hidden from view when you open the app launcher.
In some cases, an app you could previously access is no longer accessible from your app launcher gallery. When this occurs, the unavailable app displays an empty gray box with an x in the corner. To remove an unavailable app from your app launcher gallery, click the x on the app. This can occur for any of the following reasons:
- Your portal administrator removed the app from the app launcher.
- The app is no longer shared with you.
- The app owner or administrator deleted the app item.
- Your app license was revoked.
- The Esri app product name has been updated.
