Viewing cache completion status

During or after the creation of a map or image service cache, you can view a report showing the percentage of tiles completed at each scale level. You can also get the status of each caching job that has been requested.

Note:

If the execution mode of the ArcGIS Server ReportingTools service is set to Asynchronous, the cache completion status will not be reported. The ReportingTools service must be run in synchronous mode in order to view the status of tile generation and the status of each caching job. See Editing service properties in Manager to learn how to modify the properties of the ReportingTools service.

Follow these steps to view the cache status:

  1. In the Catalog window of ArcGIS for Desktop, right-click a cached service (or a service whose cache is being created) and click View Cache Status.

Here you can see an abbreviated report on whether tiles are currently being generated. You can also see the overall completion percentage of the cache. The percentage is based on the full extent of the map service. (If you are unsure of this extent, add the service to a new empty ArcMap document and click the Full Extent button.) See Spatial reporting of map cache status to learn how to create reports for a customized area of interest.

  2. Click Show Details.

This reveals a table showing the completion percentage and number of tiles for each scale level. The table also shows which level is being generated.

The scales in this table are limited to those allowed by the server administrator through the Minimum cached scale and Maximum cached scale properties. These properties are set on the Caching > Advanced Settings tab of the Service Editor dialog box.

    Note:

Map cache tiles that you have created on demand or manually copied into the cache directory are not reflected in the status report.

  3. Click the Job Status tab.

This displays all the jobs that have been requested from the server using the Manage Map Server Cache Tiles or Import Map Server Cache tools. This tab allows you to suspend jobs, fix errors, or review details of the different jobs you've requested in the past.

Right-click any job to see a context menu of options.

    • Cancel job—Stops any caching. You can resume the job later if you want.
    • Complete job—Resumes a previously canceled job and fixes any errors that were found during the initial run of the job
    • Report errors—Displays a textual report of cache extents that failed to build
    • Fix errors—Attempts to re-cache extents where errors were detected
    • Export errors to file—Exports an HTML file listing cache extents that failed to build
    • Details—Displays the tool and input parameters that were used for the job
Tip:

You can also see a status report in ArcGIS Server Manager by clicking the small grid icon Cache grid icon next to the service name. This icon is available on any running map or image service that both has a cache defined and is configured to use the cache (instead of drawing dynamically).
