Example: Publish service definitions listed in a text file

This example script reads through a text file list of service definition files (SDs) and publishes each SD as a service. This is especially useful when you want to deploy the same set of services on many computers in a lab or if you want to deploy across development, staging, and production servers.

The input file should be structured like this:

#SD|folderName|serviceName|clusterName
SD=\\mylabserver\Yellowstone.sd|folderName=Parks|serviceName=Yellowstone
SD=\\mylabserver\Rainier.sd|serviceName=Rainier
SD=C:\data\BufferGP.sd|serviceName=BufferGeoprocessing
SD=C:\data\Arches.sd|folderName=Parks|serviceName=Arches|clusterName=mapCluster

  • SD—Path to the service definition file. This location must be visible to ArcGIS Server, but it does not need to be registered with ArcGIS Server.
  • folderName—The name of the ArcGIS Server folder that should contain the service. The folder must exist already. If this property is omitted, the service is published at the root level.
  • serviceName—A name for the service if you want to override the name in the SD.
  • clusterName—The name of the ArcGIS Server cluster where the service should be deployed. If omitted, the service is published to the default cluster.

The script first checks if the service exists in the specified folder. If the service exists, it is deleted and then republished. Thus, the text file can contain a long list of services to deploy or just one service to update.
