Upgrade workgroup geodatabases on AWS

Legacy:

Workgroup geodatabases are managed and upgraded from ArcGIS Desktop. Therefore, workgroup geodatabases cannot be upgraded beyond 10.8.x.

You can upload the latest release of ArcGIS Desktop to the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance where your database server is running and upgrade your workgroup geodatabases using the following steps.

Note:

When ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop are installed on the same Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instance, they must run the same release of the software. If you install ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.x, you must upgrade the ArcGIS Server site on that instance to the same software version.

  1. Download ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop updates from your account in My Esri, place the files on your Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instance, and follow the installation instructions provided with the download to install them.

This will require you to make a remote desktop connection to your existing EC2 instance. You must open the RDP port in your security group to make remote desktop connections. You can remove this rule from your security group after you install updates and upgrade geodatabases.

  2. After you upgrade both ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop to the same software version on your EC2 instance, stop ArcGIS Server on the instance.

You must do this to release locks held by the ArcGIS Server web services use the data.

  3. Open ArcCatalog and connect to the database server in the Catalog tree.
  4. Check the upgrade status of each workgroup geodatabase.
    1. Right-click the first geodatabase and click Properties.
    2. Click the General tab.

If the upgrade status indicates an upgrade is not needed, close the Geodatabase Properties dialog box for this geodatabase and close your remote desktop session. No further action is required.

If the upgrade status indicates the geodatabase can be upgraded, close the Geodatabase Properties dialog box for this geodatabase and proceed with the remaining steps.

  5. Make a backup of the geodatabase before upgrading.
    1. Right-click the geodatabase, point to Administration, and click Backup.
    2. Type a name for the backup file.
    3. Browse to the location where you want to store the backup.
    4. Type a description of the backup.
    5. Click OK.
  6. Upgrade the geodatabase.
    1. Open the Geodatabase Properties dialog box.
    2. Click Upgrade Geodatabase.
    3. When the Upgrade Geodatabase geoprocessing tool opens, leave both the Pre-requisites check and the Upgrade geodatabase options checked, and click OK to upgrade the geodatabase.
    4. When the tool completes successfully, click Close to close the geoprocessing tool progress dialog box.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 to back up and upgrade each geodatabase on your database server.
  8. Once all geodatabases are upgraded, close your remote desktop session.
