Work with selections

Make selections in your maps and link charts using the interactive Selection Modes and manage your selection using the Selection Manager tool.

Choose interactive selection options in maps and link charts

The canvas toolbar provides access to tools common to both the map and link chart. This includes the interactive selection tools and the legend. There are three interactive canvas selection options that work on both maps and link charts. The default tool is Select and Pan Select and Pan.

  1. Click Selection Modes Select and Pan in the canvas toolbar.

  2. Select records on the map or link chart using the chosen selection tool:
    • Select and Pan Select and Pan—Click a record to select it and open the pop-up. Hold Ctrl and click records to select multiple records or deselect records. This allows you to deselect records selected using any of the other methods.
    • Rectangle Select Rectangle Select—Click the map or link chart and drag a rectangle across the records you want to select.
    • Lasso Select Lasso select—Click the map or link chart and draw with the pointer to create a freehand shape selection.
  3. Optionally, click Clear Selection Clear selection in the canvas toolbar to clear all selected records.

Manage selections

The Selection Manager tool is available in all views that provides granular management of selected entities and relationships for the active view. All selected records will be listed in the Selection Manager tool. This includes records selected through the interactive selection tools, map and link chart layer tables, and records selected through view specific context tools such as expand and filtered expand in the link chart.

  1. Click Selection Manager selection manager in the link chart context toolbar.

    The Selection Manager pane opens and lists all selected records. These are grouped by Selected Entities Entity and Selected Relationships Relationship and then by type.

  2. Manage the selection.

    • Click Remove Close to remove the record from the selection.
    • Click Pan To Pan to to center the canvas on the selected record.
    • Click the Clear button next to Selected Entities to remove all entities from the selection.
    • Click the Clear button next to Selected Relationships to remove all relationships from the selection.
    • Click Clear Clear Selection at the bottom of the Selection Manager pane to clear all selected records.

View record properties

View the properties of a selected record directly in the Selection Manager pane or open the record in the Knowledge Graph view to see all properties and relationships for that record.

  1. Click a record in the Selection Manager pane.
  2. Click the Properties properties heading at the bottom of the Selection Manager pane to expand the Properties panel properties.

  3. Optionally, click the Open in Knowledge Graph view button Open in Knowledge Graph View to open the record in the Knowledge Graph view.
  4. Optionally, click the Properties panel heading properties to collapse the Properties panel.

Add records to other content items

Selected records can be added to maps, link charts, and data cards directly from the selection manager.

  1. Click Add selection set to at the bottom of the Selection Manager pane.
  2. Click the appropriate option to add your selection to another content item.
    • Link Chart Link Chart creates a new link chart in the project.
    • Link Chart from Template new link chart from template creates a new link chart using an existing link chart as the template for the new link chart layer.

      The content for a new link chart is typically arranged using the force directed layout, and default symbols are used to visualize entities and relationships. However, if you have imported a link chart that contains custom symbology, labels, pop-ups and so on, you can use it as a template. The new link chart layer will use the same custom layer definition as the existing link chart to visualize entities and relationships.

      You can use an existing link chart as a template even if it is not an open view.

    • Map Map creates a new map in the project.
    • Map from template new map from template creates a new map using an existing map as the template for the new knowledge graph layer.

      New maps use default symbols to visualize entities. However, if you have imported a map that contains custom symbology, labels, pop-ups and so on, you can use it as a template. The new knowledge graph layer will use the same custom layer definition as the knowledge graph layer on the existing map to visualize entities.

      You can use an existing map as a template even if it is not an open view.

    • Data Card Data Card creates a new data card in your project. This option is only available if you have exactly one record selected.
    • An existing map or link chart in your project listed under Add to existing.
