Save maps

If you have privileges to create content, you can save your maps in your portal (If you don't have privileges, you can still make maps; you just can't save them). By default, the maps you make in the map viewer are private. You can save a copy of any map that is not owned by you unless the map author has enabled save as protection; you cannot update an existing map you do not own.

  1. Verify that you are signed in and have privileges to create content.
  2. Open the map you want to save in the map viewer and click Save.
    • If you own the map and want to update it or save it for the first time, click Save.
    • If you own the map and want to save a copy of the original map, click Save As.
    • If you do not own the map, click Save As to save a copy of the original map. You cannot update a map you do not own or that has been save-protected by the map author.
  3. If you are saving the map for the first time or saving a copy of the map, follow the steps below:
    1. Type a title.
    2. Type tags that describe your map.
Tags are words or short phrases that describe your map. Separate terms with commas. Federal land is considered one tag, while Federal, land is considered two tags.
    3. Enter a summary that describes the map.
    4. Choose a folder in My Content where you want to save the map and click Save.

Once you've saved your map, it appears in My Content and you can edit the item details. Depending on your sharing privileges, you may be able to share your map with groups you belong to, your organization, and everyone (public).
