Change elevation mode in a scene

In Layer properties Settings, you can change the elevation mode to customize the positioning of your layers. Under Elevation, choose the vertical positioning of the layer and its data.

Choose one of the following elevation modes:

On the ground

Drapes the layer onto the ground. If z-values are present, they are ignored.

Relative to ground

Positions the data aligned to the ground elevation. If there are z-values, they are added to the ground elevation. If elevation values are determined by an attribute or an expression, the geometry's z-values are not used.

Relative to scene

Positions the data aligned on top of 3D object scene layers and integrated mesh scene layers, depending on which has a higher elevation. If the data is not directly above a 3D object or any other feature, it is aligned to the terrain surface elevation. If there are z-values, they are added to the elevation. If elevation values are determined by an attribute or an expression, the geometry's z-values are not used.

Absolute height

Positions the data vertically based on the feature’s geometry z-value position. If elevation values are determined by an attribute or an expression, the geometry's z-values are not used. If the geometry doesn’t contain z-values, the default elevation is sea level.

See the Configure elevation section below.

Configure elevation

Click Configure more to see more options for setting the elevation of the data in the layer.

  1. Under Mode, choose one of the elevation modes from above.
  2. Under Value, choose one of the following options to determine the vertical value:
    • Geometry—Positions the data vertically based on the z-value.
    • Expression—Positions the data vertically based on values from an Arcade expression. Click </> Create expression to open a window to create a custom expression.

      Do one of the following:

      • Provide a title for the new expression at the top.
      • Create a custom expression in the editor.
      • Click Done to apply the expression.
    • Attributes—Positions the data vertically based on a layer attribute.
  3. Under Offset, enter a positive or negative integer value to vertically offset the elevation based on the chosen Mode:
    • Relative to ground—The layer is aligned to the ground and is vertically offset from the ground based on a height value entered.
    • Relative to scene—The layer is aligned to the top of the scene layer and is vertically offset from the scene layer based on a height value entered.
    • Absolute height—The layer is aligned to the z-value position assigned or defaults to the sea level position, and is vertically offset based on a height value entered.

    Note:

Offset is not available for On the ground elevation mode.

  4. Under Unit, choose the unit for the elevation and offset values.
  5. Click Done to apply the elevation to the data and return to the Layer properties pane.
