Sharing a service with your ArcGIS organization using Manager
In this topic
Using ArcGIS Server Manager, you can share your services as items with your ArcGIS organization. The backend for your organization can be ArcGIS Online or your own deployment of Portal for ArcGIS. You can share your services during or after publishing. To get started, follow the steps in the sections below.
Configuring sharing permissions during publishing
You can configure how to share you item during publishing. To do so, follow these steps.
- Create a service definition file. Manager only allows you to publish service definition (.sd) files to the server. This file will take the form of your service once it is published. For full instructions, see Creating a service definition in ArcGIS for Desktop.
- Connect Manager to your organization by following the instructions in Connecting Manager to your ArcGIS organization.
- Remaining in Manager, click Services > Manage Services > Publish Service.
- Click the Browsebutton to navigate to the service definition you want to publish, or type its path. You can only browse the file system of the machine that is running Manager. If you want to browse to a location on another machine, you must map the drive prior to browsing. Click Next.
- Optionally, enter a new name for the service and specify a folder on the server where the service will be created. The name cannot be more than 120 characters long and may contain only alphanumeric characters and underscores.
- Optionally, choose the GIS server cluster that will host the published service definition. To learn more, see About GIS server clusters.
- Click Share service as item. This allows the item to be shared as a service. Click Next.
- Specify how your item will be shared and click Next.
- My Content—Selecting this option only references the service in your personal workspace named My Content. The item is inaccessible to other users.
- Everyone (public)—Selecting this option makes your service public. This means anybody can access and see your service, including users on the web.
- Members of these groups—You can keep your service semiprivate by sharing it only with groups you belong to. A current list of groups you belong to appears once you select this option.
- <Organization name>—If you're adding an item to your organization, the organization name will display as an option, for example, My Portal for ArcGIS. Selecting this option allows the item to be shared with all authenticated users in the organization.
- Optionally, choose to enable or disable capabilities for your service definition. Click Publish.
Configuring sharing permissions after publishing
If you've already published your service, you can enable sharing or adjust its sharing permissions at any time. To do so, follow these steps.
- Connect Manager to your organization by following the instructions in Connecting Manager to your ArcGIS organization.
- Remaining in Manager, click Services > Manage Services.

- If the service is shared, click the Shared button.
