Starting the search service in ArcGIS for Desktop

The search service makes available, on the local network, a searchable index of your organization's GIS content. Before you can use the default search service, you'll need to start it. To start the search service from ArcCatalog or the Catalog window in ArcGIS for Desktop, follow these steps:

  1. In the Catalog tree, expand the GIS Servers node.
  2. Double-click Add ArcGIS Server and establish an Administer GIS server connection type to the server.

See Making an administrative connection to ArcGIS Server in ArcGIS for Desktop for instructions on how to connect. If you already have an administrative connection set up, you can skip this step.

  3. Double-click your connection to the server and locate the search service.

The default search service is in the Utilities folder.

  4. Right-click the search service and choose Start.

    Your search service is started.

You can edit the properties of your search service through the Service Editor in ArcGIS for Desktop. To do this, expand your connection to ArcGIS Server, right-click your search service, and choose Service Properties.

Additionally, you can have multiple search services participating in your site. To create additional search services, you must use the ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory. See Creating a search service for instructions.
