ArcGIS upgrades on Amazon Web Services

Esri releases new ArcGIS Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), CloudFormation templates, and an updated ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder Command Line Interface for Amazon Web Services shortly after each new ArcGIS Enterprise release. You should use the latest AMIs and tools when you build new deployments.

How you update an existing deployment depends on the type of deployment and how you created it.

  • If you deployed a stand-alone ArcGIS Server 10.5.x or newer release site using an Esri sample Amazon Web Services (AWS) CloudFormation template and you did not alter the architecture of the deployment after creating it, you can use a CloudFormation template provided by Esri to upgrade.
  • If you created an ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7 deployment using Esri sample AWS CloudFormation templates or ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder Command Line Interface for Amazon Web Services and you did not alter the architecture of the deployment after creating it, you can use a CloudFormation template provided by Esri to upgrade.
  • If you used ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services to create an ArcGIS Server 10.6.x or earlier site, upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See Upgrade ArcGIS Server for instructions.
  • If you used AWS Management Console to create your ArcGIS Server or ArcGIS Enterprise deployment, or if you created a deployment using an Esri sample AWS CloudFormation template but subsequently altered the architecture (for example, you changed the Elastic IP address, added a load balancer, or added an Elastic Block Storage volume), upgrade the software the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the following upgrade topics to upgrade each component:

Caution:

If your portal content directory is stored in an Amazon S3 bucket and you used the AWS Management Console to create your 10.6.1 or earlier release deployment, upgrade to Portal for ArcGIS 10.7.1; do not upgrade to 10.7. A known defect (BUG-000121142) will cause upgrades to 10.7 to fail.

If you used a supported CloudFormation template as described above or a Chef cookbook to deploy your portal, you can use the Esri CloudFormation upgrade templates or latest cookbooks to upgrade instead. These contain the workaround, and you do not need to manually run a script to correct the issue.

Before upgrading an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment, use the webgisdr tool installed with Portal for ArcGIS to create a backup of the ArcGIS Enterprise components. This backup allows you to restore your deployment using the same URLs if you encounter issues that require you to revert to your old deployment.

Note:

If you have a spatiotemporal big data store in your deployment, use the ArcGIS Data Store backupdatastore utility to create a backup of it, as it is not included in the backup created by the webgisdr tool.

If you don't want to apply the update on an existing instance, you can either maintain your site at its current version or launch a new site using the latest ArcGIS Enterprise on AWS AMIs and redeploy your services, data, and applications on it.
