Upgrade ArcGIS Server

The ArcGIS Server 12.0 setup package is capable of upgrading 11.0 and later versions currently installed on your system. If your ArcGIS Server site is federated with ArcGIS Enterprise, carefully review the information for upgrading ArcGIS Enterprise before upgrading ArcGIS Server.

To upgrade ArcGIS Server, follow the instructions below.

Caution:

The upgrade process will restart all of your ArcGIS Server services. You should consider your ArcGIS Server site to be offline during the upgrade.

ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server retirement

ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server is retired as of ArcGIS Enterprise 11.4. Additionally, with the retirement of ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server, you will no longer be able to register a Big Data File Share. If GeoAnalytics Server is your only server role, you can either unfederate your GeoAnalytics Server machine or configure a different role. If your server has multiple roles, you can continue to use it for roles other than GeoAnalytics Server. If you do not unfederate your GeoAnalytics Server machine, you must remove the GeoAnalytics Server role prior to upgrading.

Before upgrading Portal for ArcGIS, if your GeoAnalytics Server machine does not have any other roles and you do not intend to relicense your GeoAnalytics Server machine as a different server role, you must delete all of your Big Data File Share items and unfederate GeoAnalytics Server from your portal. Once this has been completed, you can uninstall ArcGIS Server from that machine.

If you intend to relicense your GeoAnalytics Server machine as a different server role or you will continue to use it for other existing roles, you can delete your Big Data File Share before or after you upgrade.

Upgrade ArcGIS Server from 11.0 and later

If you are upgrading from ArcGIS Server 11.0 or later, the ArcGIS Server 12.0 setup package will detect and upgrade your existing installation of ArcGIS Server on the target system. There is no need to obtain and install each previously released version in sequence or to uninstall your previous version of ArcGIS Server.

Upgrade ArcGIS Server from 10.9.x or earlier

Upgrading directly to ArcGIS Server 12.0 from version 10.9.x and earlier is not supported.

To upgrade to ArcGIS Server 12.0 from version 10.8.x - 10.9.x, first upgrade to an interim version (11.1–11.5). Then upgrade that version to ArcGIS Server 12.0. This will preserve your site's configuration store and server directories.

Starting versionInterim versions

10.8.x - 10.9.x

11.1 - 11.5

Caution:

Read the upgrade documentation for the interim version to confirm direct upgrades are supported for the ArcGIS Server version you are starting with.

Note:

Versions 10.7.1 and earlier are retired. Upgrading from these versions requires two interim upgrades. Read the 11.5 upgrade documentation for information.

Sites at version 10.0 and earlier cannot keep existing content or directories. You must uninstall the software and install ArcGIS Server 12.0 as a new site.

Prepare to upgrade ArcGIS Server

Before upgrading, carefully review the following information. See the full list of frequently asked questions for upgrading ArcGIS Server.

  • If you're upgrading to 12.0 from an earlier version, you must reauthorize your software with a new authorization file for 12.0. You can access your new authorization files in My Esri.
  • For the ArcGIS Enterprise portal to function, it must be the same version as your hosting server. You also must reinstall your ArcGIS Web Adaptor instances to the same version as ArcGIS Server.
  • Do not unfederate any server federated with a portal when you upgrade your deployment. This adversely impacts your portal deployment, as users will be unable to access, share, or use ArcGIS Server services in the portal.
  • When upgrading an ArcGIS Server site, ensure adequate space is available in the /tmp directory to store contents for the upgraded site. Determine the size for both the <install dir>/usr/config-store and <install dir>/usr/directories folder contents to approximate ample space.

  • The ArcGIS Enterprise portal's version must match the version of the hosting server, any GeoEvent Server, and any raster analysis server federated with it. For information about supported versions for other federated servers, see Federate an ArcGIS Server with your portal.

Beginning with 11.4, ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server sites are not upgraded. When you upgrade Portal for ArcGIS, the ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server site will be removed from the GeoAnalytics Server role in the organization, but the site will still be federated. You can license the site for other purposes—such as to act as a federated GIS Server—or if the site is no longer needed, you can unfederate and remove it.

  • If you back up your ArcGIS Server site before upgrading, you can use the backup if you need to roll back to the previous version. For steps on how to back up your ArcGIS Server site before upgrading, see Back up and restore your ArcGIS Server site configuration.
  • If your site is in read-only mode, the site mode will be set to editable when you upgrade. After all machines in your site have been successfully upgraded, the site will remain in editable mode. You can switch back to read-only mode once your upgrade is complete.
  • Before upgrading, clear the cache of all web browsers used to access the ArcGIS Server deployment.
  • Before you upgrade your ArcGIS Server site, ensure that any databases you use with the site are supported at the upgraded ArcGIS Server release. See the relevant ArcGIS relational database management system requirements topic below for details. Use the Other versions drop-down list to choose the ArcGIS version to which you'll be upgrading.
  • Before upgrading, check that required ports are open for communication.

ArcGIS Enterprise upgrade order

The recommended order to upgrade the components in your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment is as follows:

  1. Upgrade Portal for ArcGIS.
  2. Upgrade ArcGIS Web Adaptor (for Portal for ArcGIS).
  3. Upgrade the ArcGIS Server site serving as the portal's hosting server.
  4. Upgrade ArcGIS Web Adaptor (for ArcGIS Server).
  5. Upgrade ArcGIS Data Store.
  6. If your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment includes them, upgrade any other federated server sites.

Most federated server sites must match the version of the base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. For information on supported versions for federated server sites, see Federate an ArcGIS Server with your portal.

See the upgrade information for the type of federated servers you need to upgrade.

Upgrade a multiple-machine site

If you have a multiple-machine ArcGIS Server site, you must upgrade each machine in the site to version 12.0. It's recommended that you upgrade each ArcGIS Server machine sequentially; that is, wait until the first machine is upgraded before continuing the upgrade on the next one. Each ArcGIS Server machine in the site must be at the same version number and be licensed the same.

If you have ArcGIS Web Adaptor configured with your machines, upgrade each ArcGIS Web Adaptor instance once its corresponding ArcGIS Server machine has finished upgrading.

Upgrade ArcGIS Server on Linux

To upgrade using Linux, complete the following steps:

  1. From the command prompt, launch the ArcGIS Server 12.0 setup script as the same user that installed the existing earlier version, for example, <CD ROOT or untar directory>/Setup.

You do not need to stop ArcGIS Server before launching this script. See the instructions for installing ArcGIS Server silently for the setup options and sample syntax.

    Tip:

To launch the setup script from the ArcGIS Server 12.0 setup media, click the setup script, and click the Run in Terminal button.

The setup detects your existing earlier version of ArcGIS Server on the target machine and prompts you to continue or exit the upgrade. The following is an example:

    =========================================================================
    ArcGIS Server 12.0 (Linux)
    =========================================================================

Your ArcGIS Server <Previous Version> is installed at:

    /home/ags/arcgis/server

    Confirm Settings
    =========================================================================
Product to upgrade: ArcGIS Server <Previous Version> (Linux)
    Location to upgrade: /home/ags/arcgis/server

Your ArcGIS Server <Previous Version> will be stopped when performing the upgrade and
ArcGIS Server 12.0 will be started after the upgrade completes.

'y' to continue with these settings
'q' to exit without upgrading this product

    Enter choice [y,q] (y):

To avoid being prompted for confirmation, run /Setup -l yes -m silent instead of /Setup.

  2. Type y and press Enter to accept the detected settings and continue with the update.
    Note:

Wait while ArcGIS Server is upgraded to 12.0. This may take several minutes.

  3. After installation is complete, use the authorizeSoftware tool to reauthorize ArcGIS Server with a new license file.

You can access your new authorization files in My Esri. You can authorize your software later, but you must complete this workflow before moving on to the next step of the upgrade process.

    Note:

If you'll be authorizing ArcGIS Server as multiple server roles, you must run the authorizeSoftware tool again, once for each licensing role you apply to the machine.

If your ArcGIS Server license has an expiration date, consider updating the licenses in your enterprise geodatabases after upgrading and updating your ArcGIS Server license.

  4. Once authorized, open ArcGIS Server Manager and click Continue Server Upgrade to complete the upgrade on your first machine.

You must use ArcGIS Server Manager on the local machine where you're running the upgrade to complete this step, and you must run the upgrade one machine at a time. If a local host is not available, you can access ArcGIS Server Manager through the fully qualified domain name of the server machine on port 6443 (https://gisserver.domain.com:6443/arcgis/manager). You cannot use Continue Server Upgrade in ArcGIS Web Adaptor or a load balancer.

You can also use the upgradeserver command line utility to complete the upgrade and postupgrade operations silently. In the command line, browse to your <Server install directory>/tools/upgradeserver folder and run the following: upgradeserver.sh -s. For assistance, run the command with -h or --help.

Starting at 11.4, you can get more information on the real-time status of the ArcGIS Server post-upgrade operation through the command line utility. Through the command line utility, you can see the following stages during the upgrade process:

    • Initialize upgrade and check licenses
    • Upgrade site configurations
    • Upgrade and start System Utility services
    • Synchronize local machine with site
    • Configure Extensions and data providers
    • Generate SSL Certificate and Enable SSL
    • Final checks and cleanup

    Caution:

If errors are returned when you use Continue Server Upgrade, you may need to address the errors before you can continue. For example, if you encounter an error about an invalid license, you must reauthorize the software using a valid license. You can retry by clicking Continue Server Upgrade again.

  5. If you'll use the upgraded ArcGIS Server site for raster analysis with ArcGIS Image Server and you haven't previously used either of these roles, follow these steps:
    1. Ensure that you authorized the site with an ArcGIS Image Server licensing role.
    2. Sign in to the portal federated with your site. Sign in as a member of the default Administrator role.

The portal URL is in the format https://webadaptorhost.domain.com/<webadaptorname>/home.

    3. Click Organization > Settings > Servers.
    4. On the Servers page, click Validate server sites to verify that the federated server you want to use as a raster analysis server can still communicate with the portal.

A green check mark appears next to Status for each valid federated server.

    5. Once you verify that the server is valid, configure it as the portal's raster analysis server by clicking the current Server role assigned to the server and turning on Raster Analysis Server.

If you have a multiple-machine ArcGIS Server site, repeat the steps above on the remaining machines in your site.

If you configured ArcGIS Web Adaptor to work with your site, you must install ArcGIS Web Adaptor12.0 as well. Follow the instructions in Install ArcGIS Web Adaptor (Java Platform) 12.0 on Linux.

Note:

If you federated an ArcGIS Server site with your portal and you're using ArcGIS Web Adaptor with your site, sign in to the machine hosting the web adaptor and uninstall ArcGIS Web Adaptor. Take note of the web adaptor name; you must use the same name when you reinstall.

If you customized a service with server object extensions (SOEs) or server object interceptors (SOIs), restart the service after upgrading ArcGIS Server.

Scan for security best practices

It is recommended that you use the serverScan.py script to check for security best practices with your ArcGIS Server site after installation.
