Coordinate system requirements

Some geographic transformations (for example, NTv2, GEOCON, and NADCON5) and vertical transformations based on geoids, quasi-geoids, or other conversion grids (for example, EGM and VERTCON) require additional coordinate system files to properly render features.

The following are the additional coordinate system files that you can use on ArcGIS Server machines:

Install ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data

The ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data component is required when working with very accurate geographic transformations or with 3D datasets. See the list of supported geographic and vertical transformations to find which transformations require the grid files that are installed with ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data.

Follow the steps below to install ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data.

The ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data must be run in a graphical user interface (GUI) mode.

  1. Download the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data installation from My Esri.

    The file name is ArcGIS_Coordinate_Systems_Data_Linux_<release_part#>.tar.gz.

  2. Place the downloaded file on each machine in the GIS Server sites in your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment.

You must use the login that originally installed ArcGIS Server.

  3. Extract the installation file from the .tar.gz file.
  4. Run the extracted Setup file to launch the installation wizard.

    ./Setup

  5. Read the message in the Introduction pane of the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data Setup wizard and click Next.
  6. Review the license agreement and choose an option:
    • If you agree to the terms, click the option to accept the agreement and click Next.
    • If you do not agree to the terms, click Cancel to exit the installation.
  7. Specify the directory to which the coordinate systems data will be installed, or use the default installation directory. Click Next to proceed.

By default, the files are installed to the home directory of the user running the installation.

  8. Optionally, select the grids to exclude from the installation, and click Next.

By default, all coordinate system grids are installed.

  9. Review the installation summary.
    • If you need to change any of the installation settings, click Previous and change the settings.
    • If the installation settings are correct, click Install.
  10. When the installation process completes, click Done to close the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data Setup wizard.

Uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data

You can uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data if you no longer need any of the coordinate systems it provides.

Follow these steps to uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data:

  1. Sign in to each machine where ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data is installed.

You must use the login that originally installed ArcGIS Server.

  2. Change directories to the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data installation directory.

If you used the default location, this is the /arcgis/coordinatesystemsdata directory in your home directory.

  3. Run ./uninstall_CoordinateSystemsData to launch the Uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data wizard.
  4. Click Uninstall on the Uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data wizard.
  5. When the uninstallation process completes, click Done to close the Uninstall ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data wizard.

Update the ArcGIS Coordinate System Data (Hosted Services) file

After you install or upgrade your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment, update the coordinate system data file on the machines in the hosting server site. This file is used by hosted services.

Note:

The following workflow requires your ArcGIS Enterprise deployment to be temporarily unavailable while files are updated.

Obtain the ArcGIS Coordinate System Data (Hosted Services) file

Download and extract the file you need to place on the hosting server machines.

  1. Download the ArcGIS Coordinate System Data (Hosted Services) compressed file from My Esri.
  2. Browse to the location where you placed the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data (Hosted Services) file and extract the compressed file.

The extracted folder contains a single file named jpe-sdk-data.jar. This is the file you will place on the hosting server machines.

    Tip:

Keep a backup copy of the jpe-sdk-data.jar file that you downloaded. The jpe-sdk-data.jar file is removed from the machine when you uninstall the software. If you uninstall and then reinstall the software, you must replace the file.

Place the file on hosting server machines

Follow these steps to replace the jpe-sdk-data.jar file on each machine in the hosting server site:

  1. Sign in to each machine in the hosting server using the ArcGIS Server account login.
  2. Run the stopserver.sh utility to stop ArcGIS Server on each machine in the hosting server.

This command utility is in the ArcGIS Server installation directory.

  3. Change to the /ArcGIS/Server/framework/lib/shared_arcgis directory in the ArcGIS Server directory and rename the existing jpe-sdk-data.jar file to jpe-sdk-data.oldjar.
  4. Place the jpe-sdk-data.jar file you extracted from the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data (hosted services) download in the shared_arcgis directory.
  5. Run the startserver.sh utility to start ArcGIS Server on each machine in the hosting server.

This command utility is in the ArcGIS Server installation directory.

Add third-party transformation grids

For some grid-based geographic and vertical transformations, ArcGIS Server includes their definitions but does not distribute the grid files due to license restrictions. You must obtain these grid files directly from their third-party provider or government agency. In some cases, you may need to purchase the grid files from their provider.

Once you obtain the grid files you require and you have installed ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data on each machine in the ArcGIS Server site, create subfolders in the coordinatesystemsdata\pedata directory on each machine in the site. Sort files into folders by transformation method name, such as NTv2 or vertical\geoid. NTv2 files are further sorted into a country folder. For detailed instructions, contact your local distributor.
