Add a knowledge graph to a link chart

Create a link chart to visualize, analyze, and explore a knowledge graph's content. You can create a blank link chart in the Investigation Contents pane or you can start from any of the views in which you work with a knowledge graph: maps, the knowledge graph view, data cards, global search, and other link charts. You can select entities and relationships in the active view and add them to a new link chart.

When a link chart is created and opened, any entities you selected in the knowledge graph view, for example, are added. When you select and add a relationship, the relationship is added along with its origin and destination entities, even when those entities were not selected in the knowledge graph view. When you add entities and relationships to a link chart, a link chart layer is created in the Link Chart Contents pane. The entities and relationships added to the new link chart are arranged using the radial tree layout by default; this becomes the current layout for the new link chart. You can change how records are arranged by applying a different layout option on the context toolbar.

You can also add entities and relationships to an existing link chart from any of the places in which you work with a knowledge graph's content: maps, knowledge graph view, data cards, global search, and other link charts.

Regardless of the method you use to add content to a link chart, the layout currently in use for visualizing the link chart's content is automatically reapplied to the entire link chart.

Open a sublayer's attribute table to see the properties of the entities or relationships of that type.

Note:

Knowledge Studio allows a maximum of 13 content items open at once. If you have reached the limit, you need to close a tab before you can open the link chart. If you created a link chart, the link chart is created but not opened. Close a tab at the bottom of the view and click the new link chart in the Investigation Contents pane to open it.

Create a blank link chart

After you create a blank link chart, use any of the other methods listed to add data to the link chart.

1. In the Investigation Contents pane, click Add Content .
2. Click Link Chart .

A link chart is created in the Investigation Contents pane.

Add content from the knowledge graph view

You can add a single record, an entire entity type, or specific instances of an entity or relationship type to a link chart from the knowledge graph view. When you add content to a link chart, a link chart layer representing the entire knowledge graph is created and added to the link chart but only the selected records are included in the layer. New link charts appear in the Investigation Contents pane.

Add a single entity or relationship

A record displayed in the details pane can be added to a link chart.

1. On the context toolbar in the knowledge graph view, click Add Record To .
2. Click the appropriate option to add a link chart layer to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

Add multiple entities or relationships

Multiple entities of an entity or relationship type can be added to a link chart from the knowledge graph view.

1. Check the check boxes to select entities or relationships from the record list.
2. In the record list, click Add Selection To .
3. Click the appropriate option to add a knowledge graph to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

Add an entire entity or relationship type

All instances of an entity or relationship type can be added to a link chart.

1. Hover over an entity or relationship type in the Knowledge Graph Contents pane and click Add Selection To .
2. Click the appropriate option to add a knowledge graph to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

Add an entire knowledge graph

All entities and relationships in the knowledge graph can be added to a link chart.

1. In the Knowledge Graph Contents pane, click Add Selection To next to the knowledge graph title.
2. Click the appropriate option to add a knowledge graph to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

The link chart opens in a tab and becomes the active view. The entities and relationships selected in the knowledge graph view are added and arranged using the appropriate link chart layout. The radial tree layout is applied to the records in new link charts by default and default symbology is used. New link charts appear in the Investigation Contents pane.

Add content from a link chart

After creating a link chart from an investigation's knowledge graph, you can add selected content from the existing link chart to another link chart.

1. Select the entities and relationships in the link chart that you want to add to the other link chart.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking the entities and relationships to add.
   • Click Select All on the link chart context toolbar and click the name of an existing link chart.
   • Select records in the link chart sublayer record table.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking the entities and relationships to deselect them.
   • Click anywhere on the canvas to deselect all entities and relationships.
2. On the link chart context toolbar, click Add Selection To .
3. Click the appropriate option to add a knowledge graph to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

Add content from a map

After creating a map from an investigation's knowledge graph, you can add selected content from the existing link chart to another link chart.

1. Select the entities and relationships in the link chart that you want to add to the other link chart.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking the entities and relationships to add.
   • Select records in the map sublayer record table.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking the entities and relationships to deselect them.
   • Click anywhere on the canvas to deselect all entities and relationships.
2. On the link chart context toolbar, click Add Selection To .
3. Click the appropriate option to add a knowledge graph to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

Add a knowledge graph layer from global search

Entity and relationship types returned in global search results can be added to new or existing link charts.

1. Select records by checking the check box next to each record.
2. Click Add Selection To at the top of the search results pane.
3. Click the appropriate option to add the selected records to the link chart.
   • Under Add to new, click Link Chart to create a link chart in the project.
   • Under Add to existing, click the name of an existing link chart.

The link chart opens in a tab and becomes the active view. The entities and relationships selected in the knowledge graph view are added and arranged using the appropriate link chart layout. The radial tree layout is applied to the records in new link charts by default and default symbology is used. New link charts appear in the Investigation Contents pane.

Turn the visibility of knowledge graph layers and sublayers on or off

You can show or hide a link chart layer and entity type and relation type sublayers in a link chart.

1. Click Options next to the layer in the contents pane.
2. Click Toggle visibility to show or hide the knowledge graph layer or its sublayers.

Rename a link chart layer or sublayers

A link chart layer and its sublayers can be renamed in the link chart view. Changing the name only changes the display name of the layer in the Link Chart Contents pane of the current link chart. It does not change the layer's name across other link charts in the project, or the name of the entity or relationship type the layer represents.

1. Click Options next to the layer in the contents pane.
2. Click Rename .

   The rename dialog box appears.

3. Provide the new layer name and click OK.

Remove knowledge graph records from a link chart

Entities and relationships can be removed from a link chart. Removed records remain in other maps, link charts, and data cards in the project.

1. Select the entities and relationships to remove from the link chart.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking the entities and relationships.
   • Click Select All to select all entities and relationships.
   • Select records in the entity or relationship type sublayer record table.
   • Press the Ctrl key while clicking selected entities and relationships on the canvas to deselect them.
   • Click anywhere on the canvas to deselect all entities and relationships.
2. On the context toolbar, click Remove .

View the legend

Each entity type and relationship type in the link chart has default symbology applied. Use the legend to see the symbology for each sublayer.

On the context toolbar, click Toggle Legend .

Change the basemap

Change the basemap to change the background color of a link chart.

1. On the context toolbar, click Change Basemap .
2. Choose the basemap to use as the background.
