Switch basemap

A basemap provides a background of geographical context for the content in your scene. ArcGIS Online includes a basemap gallery with a variety of choices, including topography, imagery, and streets. You can configure the contents of the basemap gallery if you have administrator privileges in your organization. To use these basemaps they need to follow the scene viewer basemap requirements.

  1. Click the thumbnail of the basemap that best emphasizes your scene.
  2. Click X to close Basemap.

Note:

You can also configure the contents of the basemap gallery if you have administrator privileges in your organization. The scene viewer only supports tiled map layers (the ArcGIS Online tiling scheme) basemaps that use the WGS 1984 Web Mercator projection.

See through ground

When you are viewing a scene, you can make the ground transparent to see underground layers.

  1. Click the Basemap buttonBasemap to open the gallery.
  2. Click the See through ground switch to see underground layers.
  3. Click X to close Basemap.

Turn elevation off in your scene

You can view the ground at sea level and keep your scene in 3D when you turn your elevation off.

  1. Verify you are signed in to the portal.
  2. Open the scene viewer.
  3. Click the Modify button Modify to open the Contents pane.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. Click Elevation to turn on and off elevation.
  6. Click Done to go back to Contents.
Tip:

If you create a scene that doesn't need ground elevation, turn off elevation to improve performance.

Clip to extent

In a local scene, you can clip the basemap and layers to the current extent of your view. This is useful for increasing performance, focusing key elements of your project, and interacting with underground layers.
