Change symbols without styles

In Configure Layer, you can change the appearance of your line and polygon feature layers by adjusting the shape, color, and size of features in your layer without applying smart mapping styles. You can also apply additional options such as adjusting transparency and displaying pop-ups.

Change line and polygon symbols

The Symbols option is below the other Configure Layer options. Original Symbols is selected by default. This displays the symbology of the layer when the scene was last saved. If it is a new scene, the symbology of the layer when it was originally added to the scene is displayed. Once you've changed your symbols, see the Additional configure layer options section below to further adjust how your layers appear in your scene.

Change 2D line symbols

To change the properties of 2D line symbols, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Symbols drop-down menu Drop-down and choose Change symbols so that Type displays 2D Line.
  2. For Size (px), enter the line size and choose a color.
  3. Set the transparency of the color by entering a percentage value in the color picker.
  4. Click Done.

Change 3D path symbols

To change the properties of 3D path symbols, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Symbols drop-down menu Drop-down and choose Change symbols so that Type displays 3D Path.
  2. For Size (meters), enter the diameter size and choose a color.
  3. Set the transparency of the color by entering a percentage value in the color picker.
  4. Click Done.

Change 2D polygon symbols

To change the properties of 2D polygon symbols, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Symbols drop-down menu Drop-down and choose Change symbols so that Type displays 2D Polygon.
  2. For Fill Color, change the fill color.
  3. Set the transparency of the color by entering a percentage value in the color picker.
  4. For Outline Size (px), enter the outline size and choose the outline color of the polygon.
  5. Set the transparency of the color by entering a percentage value in the color picker.
  6. Click Done.

Change 3D extrusion symbols

Modify the appearance of your polygon by extruding up or down based on a value you give it in meters.

  1. Click the Symbols drop-down menu Drop-down and choose Change symbols so that Type displays 3D Extrusion.
  2. For Fill Color, change the fill color.
  3. Set the transparency of the color by entering a percentage value in the color picker.
  4. For Extrusion (meters), enter a positive value in meters if you want the extrusion to go up vertically or a negative value if you want it to go down.
  5. Click Done.

Additional configure layer options

You can emphasize different aspects of your scene by applying options such as Elevation Mode, Transparency, or Labels.

Change elevation mode

You can change the elevation mode to customize the positioning of your layers.

  1. Click the Elevation Mode drop-down menu Drop-down. Options appear that determine the vertical positioning of the layer and its data.
    • On the ground—Drapes the layer onto the ground.
    • Relative to ground—Positions the data aligned to the ground elevation. If an offset is applied, the layer is aligned to the ground.
    • Absolute height—Positions the data vertically based on the feature’s geometry z-value position. If the geometry doesn’t contain z-values, the default elevation is sea level.
    • <custom>—Positions the data vertically based on a custom elevation defined in the layer, such as from an attribute expression. The <custom> option is only visible when the layer has custom elevation.
    • Offset—Applies a positive or negative integer value in meters to vertically offset the elevation based on the chosen Elevation Mode.
      • Relative to ground—The layer is aligned to the ground and is vertically offset from the ground based on a height value entered.
      • Absolute height—The layer is aligned to the z-value position assigned or defaults to the sea level position, and is vertically offset based on a height value entered.
      Note:

The Offset option is not available for the On the ground elevation mode.

Adjust transparency

You can adjust the transparency of your layers by sliding the Transparency slider to increase or decrease the transparency. The percentage is indicated above the slider.

Apply labels

If labels are available in your layer, you will see a Labels toggle key. By clicking Labels in your scene, you can immediately convey information about the scene based on an attribute associated in the layer.

Display pop-ups

Click the Pop-ups toggle key to activate pop-ups in your layer. Features are highlighted and display in-depth information about the features when you click them.

View the legend

A legend displays the meaning of the symbols used to represent features in your scene. Legends consist of 2D and 3D symbols in your scene with explanatory text. You can modify the legend by changing the visibility of layers, symbology, and the naming of the layers.

  1. Click the Legend switch to show or hide the layer in the Layers/Legend tool Layers/Legend.
  2. To view the legend, click the Layers/Legend tool Layers/Legend and click Legend.
    Note:

Legend hides layers that are not in the current extent.
