What's new in the ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 portal

ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 includes updates, enhancements, and bug fixes. For a list of issues fixed at 10.9.1, see the 10.9.1 Issues Addressed List.

Review the deprecation notice to determine whether your hardware and software components are still compatible with version 10.9.1 and to see a list of functionality that has been deprecated. To review which earlier ArcGIS product versions are compatible with ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1, see Portal compatibility with earlier versions of ArcGIS.

Portal for ArcGIS installation and upgrades

  • Enhancements have been made to the Portal for ArcGIS installer at 10.9.1 and you can expect faster installation and upgrade performance.
  • If you're upgrading to 10.9.1 from 10.8.1 or an earlier version, or want to license an app that is new to ArcGIS Enterprise at this release, you must reauthorize your software. You can obtain a new license file from My Esri.
  • Upgrading directly to Portal for ArcGIS 10.9.1 from versions 10.3.1 or earlier is not supported. To upgrade Portal for ArcGIS 10.3.1 or earlier, first upgrade it to an interim version (10.4 – 10.9). Then upgrade that version to 10.9.1.
  • The new Map Viewer available at this release was previously available as a beta using a separate installer at 10.8.1 and 10.9. If you installed the beta on a 10.8.1 or 10.9 portal, you do not have to uninstall the beta software before you upgrade to 10.9.1.

Organization administration

Organization administrators can take advantage of the following new capabilities and options in this release:

  • New design options are now available for customizing your organization's home page. You can configure different color and typography options when designing your home page in the home page editor.
  • Administrators can now create and manage webhooks in Portal for ArcGIS to monitor various events associated with portal items, users, or groups, as well as automatically run a notebook in ArcGIS Notebook Server when a specified event occurs.
  • When adding members to your portal from a file, you can now download a CSV file with prepopulated fields in your specified language to use as a template.
  • ArcGIS Knowledge is a new product available at 10.9.1. An ArcGIS Knowledge Server, graph ArcGIS Data Store, andArcGIS Knowledge user type extension are required if ArcGIS Pro users in your organization will create knowledge graph services to explore, create, and analyze entities and the relationships between them.
  • A new Map Viewer is available at this release. Administrators can now configure the new Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic (formerly known as Map Viewer) as the default map viewer for the organization.

User experience

A new streamlined experience for adding content to your organization is available from the New item button on the Content page. To save you time, the new interface allows you to drag and drop files onto the interface instead of browsing to them. Tags are also not required in the new interface, which allows you to take the time to determine the best tags for an item before you add them. The improved design also includes simplified workflows for publishing hosted layers from files, linking to layers on the web, and creating feature layers, tile layers, and locator views.

The Create app button was also added to the Content page, providing you with a new access point for creating ArcGIS Configurable Apps.

Data management

The following functionality and improvements are now available for creating and managing layers in ArcGIS Enterprise portals:

  • As mentioned in the previous section, the interface in the portal for adding files, layers, and data stores was improved at this release.
  • You can add big data file shares through the New item interface in the portal to create a data store item and a big data file share item. Use the big data file share for input to or output from GeoAnalytics Tools.
  • You can add a database data store item for supported cloud data warehouses. However, you can register a cloud data warehouse with the portal's hosting server only, and bulk publishing from these items is not supported. To publish map image layers from cloud data warehouses, add a query layer to a map in ArcGIS Pro and publish. If you create a snapshot of the data when you publish, you can periodically refresh the web layer item in the portal to update the snapshot with data from the data warehouse.
  • You can add cloud data store items that access storage locations in Google Cloud.

Mapping and visualization

A new Map Viewer is available at this release. Highlights of the new new Map Viewer include the following:

  • Draw features and place stamps on the map using the new Sketch tool.
  • Switch quickly between layers when styling, configuring pop-ups, and making other changes to multiple layers in the map.
  • Hide interface elements to expand the size of the map display.

The organization administrator can configure the new Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic (formerly known as Map Viewer) as the default map viewer for the organization. Individual organization members can set a different default map viewer in their profile.

Several hundred ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World boundary layer items that were previously in mature support status are now retired. Use the newest boundary layers included with ArcGIS Enterprise portal instead.

3D GIS

  • You can now edit feature layer data directly in Scene Viewer. Use interactive handles to create and update point, line, and polygon geometry, and enable snapping for accurate placement of vertices. Attributes can also be updated for scene layers.
  • You can now create elevation profile charts in Scene Viewer. Compare the heights for terrain and 3D objects. Draw or select a line in your scene and interactively explore the elevation and view statistics, such as the elevation gain or slope.
  • Configure pop-ups in your scene. Use fields, text, charts, and other media in your pop-ups to tell a complete story with your data.
  • The new Save layer option allows you to save the visualization of your scene layer so it can be added to any scene. Saving the layer stores the layer style and properties, such as filters and pop-up configurations.
  • The new Designer toolbar in Scene Viewer brings a modern look and unified experience that allows quick navigation between the authoring tools, such as layers and slides.
  • Rendering of PBR materials and improved visual quality of scene layers are now applied with a default quality setting. Also, transparency rendering when visualizing scenes with semitransparent ground is enhanced. Finally, scenes have reduced memory consumption when there is only a single semitransparent tiled layer.
  • Scene Viewer now allows you to identify the source and shape of shadows by selecting buildings and other 3D models in your scene.

Sharing and collaboration

ArcGIS Enterprise deployments for Windows and Linux now support distributed collaborations with ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes as either the host or guest participant. At 10.9, ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes could only participate in distributed collaborations with other ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes deployments for ArcGIS Enterprise-to-ArcGIS Enterprise collaborations, or act as the guest for an ArcGIS Online-to-ArcGIS Enterprise collaboration. For more information, see About distributed collaboration.
