ArcGIS upgrades on Amazon Web Services

How you upgrade existing deployments depends on the following factors:

  • The method you used to create the deployment.

Example methods include ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services, ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services, Amazon Web Services CloudFormation templates provided by Esri, Chef cookbooks provided by Esri, or installation of software using the same procedures as an on-premises deployment.

  • The original version of the deployment.

This is the version at which you created the deployment. For example, if you created an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment at 10.7.1 and upgraded it to 11.1, the original ArcGIS version for that deployment is 10.7.1.

  • The version you are upgrading from.

In the example above, you are upgrading from 11.1.

    Note:

Upgrading directly to 12.0 from version 10.8, 10.8.1, 10.9, or 10.9.1 is not supported. You must upgrade to an interim version, and upgrade that version to 12.0.

Versions 10.7.1 and earlier are retired. Upgrading from these versions requires two interim upgrades. Read the 11.5 upgrade documentation for instructions to upgrade.

  • Whether or not the deployment includes functionality or item types that are not supported at 12.0 and must be migrated before you upgrade.

    This includes the following:

    • Hosted scene layers with caches stored in the tile cache data store
    • Apps created using ArcGIS Web AppBuilder
    • Apps created using ArcGIS Configurable Apps

Depending on which version you're upgrading from, you may need to upgrade to an interim version before upgrading to 12.0. When deciding the interim version to use, take into account retired components and item types that you must migrate or remove before upgrading to 12.0.

The table below shows what interim version, if any, you must upgrade to before you can upgrade to 12.0 based on the version you're upgrading from and whether your deployment includes functionality that is no longer supported.

Deployment includes functionality no longer supportedVersion you're upgrading fromInterim versions

If your organization has an ArcGIS Enterprise 11.4 deployment that contains hosted scene layers with caches in the tile cache data store, but it does not contain any apps created using ArcGIS Web AppBuilder or ArcGIS Configurable Apps that must be migrated, you can migrate the hosted scene layer caches to the object store and then upgrade to the ArcGIS Enterprise deployment directly to 12.0.

See the ArcGIS Blog article Dive into ArcGIS Enterprise 11.5 before you delve into 12 for more information.

Deployment methods, versions, and upgrade methods

In general, if you create a deployment using a particular tool or method, you can continue using that same tool to upgrade.

For example, if you create a deployment with the ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app or command line interface, you can use it to upgrade the deployment. But if you configured each component in AWS using the same method as you would for an on-premises deployment, you cannot use the ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app or command line interface to upgrade; you must upgrade using use the same methods as you would use for an on-premises deployment.

As indicated above, though, the original deployment version and the version you're upgrading from also determine what method you can use to upgrade. The tables in the following sections outline these differences in supported upgrade methods.

Deployment created with ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services

The ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder Command Line Interface for Amazon Web Services was introduced with ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7.

At 10.7.1, the ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app was introduced.

Both the app and the command line interface allow you to create and upgrade ArcGIS Enterprise deployments and stand-alone or federated ArcGIS Server sites.

Note:

If you created the deployment using the Cloud Builder app, use the app to upgrade. If you created the deployment using the Cloud Builder command line interface, use the command line interface to upgrade.

The table below describes upgrade methods for deployments created with the ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app based on the deployment's original version and the version from which you are upgrading.

Upgrading deployments created with ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services

You must first upgrade to a supported interim version before you upgrade to 12.0.

10.7.1, 10.7, or any version if you altered the architecture after deploying (for example, you changed the Elastic IP address, added a load balancer, or added an Elastic Block Storage volume).

Any version

Upgrade the deployment the same way you would upgrade on-premises software.

You must first upgrade to a supported interim version before you upgrade to 12.0.

Follow the upgrade instructions for the interim version, and see the upgrade topics for each component to upgrade them to 12.0.

Deployment created using an Esri sample CloudFormation template

Esri began providing sample AWS CloudFormation templates with ArcGIS 10.3.1. Over time, templates have been added that allow you to create many types of deployments, and add more components to existing deployments.

Note:

When you upgrade an 11.3 or earlier deployment using a CloudFormation template provided by Esri that you access using an IAM role, you must update the IAM role to include new policies before you configure the object store.

The table below describes upgrade methods for deployments created using an Esri sample CloudFormation template based on the deployment's original version and the version from which you are upgrading.

10.7.1 or earlier or any version if you altered the architecture (for example, you changed the Elastic IP address, added a load balancer, or added an Elastic Block Storage volume) after deploying using a CloudFormation template.

Any version

Upgrade the deployment the same way you would upgrade on-premises software.

You must first upgrade to 11.5, 11.4, 11.3, 11.2, 11.1, or 11.0 before you can upgrade to 12.0.

Follow the upgrade instructions for the interim version, and see the upgrade topics for each component to upgrade them to 12.0.

ArcGIS Server sites created using the ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services app

At 10.6.1 and earlier, the ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services app was available to help you create ArcGIS Server sites and managed databases.

For ArcGIS Server sites created using the ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services app, you must upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software.

First upgrade to a supported interim release, test the site, and upgrade to 12.0. Follow the upgrade instructions for the interim version, and see Upgrade ArcGIS Server for instructions to upgrade to 12.0.

Deployment created using the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Management Console

If you used AWS Management Console to create your deployment, upgrade the software the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the following upgrade topics to upgrade each component:

ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server sites cannot be upgraded.

Create backup files before upgrading

Always create a backup of your deployment before you upgrade it or apply a patch to it.

You can use the webgisdr utility provided with Portal for ArcGIS to create a backup of most components in an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. This backup allows you to restore the deployment using the same URLs if you encounter issues that require you to revert to your old deployment.

Note:

Depending on what version you are upgrading from, some data store types may not be included in this backup. If you are upgrading a deployment that includes data store types not included when you run the webgisdr utility, use the ArcGIS Data Store backupdatastore utility to create backups of those data store types before you upgrade.

For instructions to upgrade a stand-alone ArcGIS Server site, see Back up and restore an ArcGIS Server site configuration.

ArcGIS GeoEvent Server upgrades

No matter what method you use to upgrade an ArcGIS GeoEvent Server site to 12.0, you must do the following:

Single-machine ArcGIS Notebook Server site upgrades

No matter what method you use to upgrade a single-machine ArcGIS Notebook Server site (11.1 and earlier) to 12.0, you must move the workspace directory before you upgrade. See the ArcGIS Notebook Server (Linux) installation guide for instructions.

Primary-standby ArcGIS Data Store graph store

The primary-standby mode for the graph store is no longer supported. When you upgrade a primary-standby graph store, it is placed in single instance mode and only one machine remains in the graph store.

Note:

If you require high availability after upgrading, you can change the graph store deployment mode to cluster and add two EC2 instances configured as graph store machines. However, you must use ArcGIS Data Store utilities to do this and, going forward, you cannot use ArcGIS Enterprise on Amazon Web Services deployment tools to upgrade. You must use the same method as you would if you deployed on-premises for subsequent upgrades.

Databases and geodatabases

If your deployment includes registered databases, you must upgrade the database management systems and enterprise geodatabases separately; the ArcGIS Enterprise on Amazon Web Services deployment tools do not upgrade them.

For the database management system, follow the instructions provided by the database provider. To upgrade enterprise geodatabases, see the following:

Note:

Managed databases are no longer supported. However, if your deployment includes a managed database, it will remain in your deployment when you upgrade.

Operating systems

Before you upgrade to 12.0, ensure the operating system versions on the Amazon EC2 machines used by your deployment are supported with ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0 on AWS. If they are not, you must upgrade the operating system before you upgrade the ArcGIS Enterprise components.

Patches

A patch notification tool (patchnotification) is included with ArcGIS software. It is in the tools directory of each ArcGIS component's installation directory. The patch notification tool lists and installs the patches. However, for 10.8 deployments, you must install patches one at a time. On 10.8.1 or later deployments, you can apply patches in bulk when components are installed on the same Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance.

Always read patch descriptions before applying them. You can find these on the Downloads page of the Esri support website.
