What's new in ArcGIS Server 10.9.1

ArcGIS Server 10.9.1 includes new functionality related to using ArcMap service runtime and Python 2.x in your installation, provides email notifications when disk space on federated servers runs low, and supports a few new sources for user-defined data stores.

Bug fixes have also been made in ArcGIS Server 10.9.1. For a list of issues that were fixed at 10.9.1, see the 10.9.1 Issues Addressed List.

Review the deprecation notice to determine whether your hardware and software components are compatible with version 10.9.1 and to see a list of functionality that has been deprecated.

New features and requirements in 10.9.1 are described in the following sections.

Email notifications when disk space is low

When the disk space on your server machine reaches a specific threshold, defaulted to 10 GB and 1 GB of remaining space, warnings are written to the ArcGIS Server logs to notify you that you need to add disk space to the machine. Now, an email will also be sent to administrative contacts set in the portal to warn of low disk space if you configure email notification for the portal.

To learn more, see Disk space monitoring for ArcGIS Server.

Optional ArcMap service runtime and Python 2.x installation

At 10.9.1, when you install or upgrade ArcGIS Server, you have the option to disable the ArcMap Runtime Support feature. You can also disable or enable the ArcMap Runtime Support feature after installing or upgrading ArcGIS Server. This feature enables the ability to publish and host ArcMap based services and includes an installation of Python 2.x. If your organization has concerns about installing Python 2.x on your system, disabling this feature will ensure that Python 2.x is not installed with ArcGIS Server.

It is recommended that you use this opportunity at 10.9.1 to migrate your ArcMap based services to use the ArcGIS Pro service runtime. ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 will be the last release to support ArcMap based services. After this release, it will no longer be possible to publish or consume services from ArcMap (including ArcPy based in ArcMap) in ArcGIS Server sites. Services using the ArcMap service runtime will no longer be able to run if present during an upgrade to a later release of ArcGIS Server. Use this opportunity to migrate and test your services, Python scripts, geoprocessing tools, and any ArcObjects server object extensions (SOEs) and server object interceptors (SOIs) before support ends at the next release.

For more information about the security implications and how to handle migration to the ArcGIS Pro service runtime, see Security best practices.

ArcGIS Knowledge

With ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1, ArcGIS Knowledge introduces the ability to create a knowledge graph, leveraging a new ArcGIS Data Store graph store and an ArcGIS Knowledge Server site. Knowledge graphs let you model real world systems in a nonspatial manner. Entities represent real-world objects, and the relationships establish the connections between entities. Properties can be used to record facts about an entity or a relationship. The knowledge graph can reference documents that provide authoritative sources of the information in the knowledge graph.

When you use ArcGIS Pro with ArcGIS Enterprise, you can create an empty knowledge graph, populate it with data, and edit the contents of the graph. You can add a knowledge graph to a map in your project to view and analyze an entity's spatial features. Create link charts to discover connections and analyze influence of an entity or a relationship in the system. To create and interact with a knowledge graph, you must have an ArcGIS Knowledge user type extension.

For more information, see the ArcGIS Knowledge help.

Upgrades

Upgrades from ArcGIS Server 10.3.1 or earlier versions are no longer supported. To upgrade your ArcGIS Server site to 10.9.1, you must first upgrade it to version 10.4 or later; then, upgrade it again to 10.9.1.

When you upgrade to 10.9.1, you have the option to exclude the ArcMap service runtime and Python 2.x, as discussed in the previous section.

Migrate geodata services and image services

The tools that allow you to migrate services from the ArcMap service runtime to the ArcGIS Pro service runtime have been expanded at this release.

  • You can now migrate geodata services.
  • You can use the Edit Runtime operation in ArcGIS Server Manager to migrate image services.
  • The Edit Runtime operation can now run on services that are stopped.

Services that use the ArcMap service runtime will not be supported after this release. Therefore, you should start migrating your services now. See Migrating services to the ArcGIS Pro service runtime for more information.

User-maintained data stores

You can register the following as database data stores:

All are accessed through database connections that you create in ArcGIS Pro and add to maps as query layers. To publish web layers, the ArcGIS Server site must be configured to access the data in the data sources. To publish web layers from a cloud data warehouse, the database connection file must be registered with the hosting server.

You can also register Google Cloud buckets as cloud stores for raster stores and to store caches for map services and imagery services.
